Film Review: The Princess
We know the princess kicks butt in the movie, but does the film do the same?
Set in a medieval kingdom, THE PRINCESS tells the tale of a princess who is chained and imprisoned in a tower to await her being forced to marry the ruthless son of a diplomat. However, unlike most fairy tales with a young woman locked in a building, our title character is a trained fighter, making for an enjoyable adventure of over 90 minutes. The film was directed by Le-Van Kiet and was written by Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton.
Joey King plays the princess with Dominic Cooper as her antagonist/betrothed, Julius. The film also features Olga Kurylenko as Julius' partner Moira and Veronica Ngo as Linh, the trainer of the princess. The characters don't possess much in terms of depth, and they all work pretty much in broad strokes. The princess is badass, Julius is an obnoxious creep, Moira is the killer lackey, and Lihn is the excellent trainer. Since the characters are vast, the plot of THE PRINCESS is relatively straightforward. We are treated to occasional flashbacks of the princess during her training. Still, the film is pretty much about the fights of the princess as she escapes the tower and seeks to rescue her family, who has been held captive by Julius.
