Moonshot is the kind of movie that should probably be terrible. I mean on paper it is absolutely ridiculous and the terrible characterizations of just about everyone except the main characters are so laughable it’s not funny. In fact, one of the things that hit you pretty hard about the movie in the first twenty minutes is that it doesn’t exactly make sense.

Moonshot is about Walt (Cole Sprouse) and Sophie (Lana Condor) who go to Mars to be reunited with their love interests. But more specifically it’s about Walt, who is a Marty Stu character of the highest order. He has a terrible life on Earth, but it seems that he does so because he has such a single-minded focus on getting to Mars. For reasons… Nothing especially bad ever happens to him and he spends the movie one step away from disaster, but the disaster never comes. And he is never worried about the disaster coming either; almost as if he is in on it. “I’m the main character, nothing bad can ever happen to me.” The story itself seems to be an inconvenience but nothing really more than that.

While I loved the acting in Moonshot, I thought many of the scenes were very well done. I think the writing overall, took too much time to characterize the main characters and no time at all to characterize the people that they were going to…
