We are full speed ahead of the Oscar season. To keep a close eye on the race, I’m offering my new series in which we’ll focus each month on film releases with Academy Award aspirations. We aim to showcase the specific categories where each picture could be competitive.

November 4, 2022 — Causeway

Jennifer Lawrence stars as a soldier struggling to adjust to life after returning home in Causeway, the first directorial effort by Lila Neugebauer. An intimate look at the trials and tribulations that follow a veteran’s transition from military to civilian life.

November 11, 2022 — My Father’s Dragon

Five-time Oscar nominee Cartoon Saloon produces My Father’s Dragon, an animated film about a young boy who finds the friendship of his life in the search for a captive dragon.

November 11, 2022 — Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is the most intimate and heartfelt Marvel film. Ryan Coogler, with the help of his cast’s performances, succeeds in delivering a picture in celebration of Chadwick Boseman’s life. It follows a war between Wakanda and Talokan in the wake of King T’Challa’s passing.

November 16, 2022 — The Wonder

From acclaimed Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Lelio, The Wonder is a showcase for one of Hollywood’s most sought-after emerging stars, Florence Pugh, as a nurse who leaves England for a remote Irish village in 1862 to investigate a young girl’s supposedly miraculous fasting.

November 18, 2022 — She Said

She Said, starring Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan, tracks the journalists who broke the story centering around Harvey Weinstein, which broke decades of silence around sexual assault in Hollywood and forever changed American culture.

November 18, 2022 — The Menu

Longtime Succession and television director Mark Mylod helms The Menu, an original black comedy horror, where a couple travels to an isolated and exclusive restaurant where the chef has prepared a sumptuous menu with shocking surprises.

November 18, 2022 — The Inspection

Written and directed by Elegance Bratton, The Inspection draws on the filmmaker’s experience dealing with his sexual orientation, both in a Marine Corps boot camp and with his mother.

November 18, 2022 — Bones and All

Bones and All is the story of the first love between Maren and Lee, whose romance is forbidden due to their cannibalistic tendencies. The two embark on a road trip to grow and find their place in society despite who they are at the core: cannibals.

November 23, 2022 — Good Night Oppy

The journey of a Mars rover, nicknamed Oppy, launched in 2003, which has been exploring Mars for nearly 15 years despite a supposedly inferior assignment. Archival footage, interviews between scientists and engineers, and reconstructions of the rover’s walks across the Martian landscape in search of water are all featured in the documentary film Good Night Oppy.

November 23, 2022 — The Fabelmans

A semi-autobiographical story heavily influenced by the life of its director, Steven Spielberg. Themes such as art, hardship, and the sacrifices of love and family are prominent in what is considered an early contender for best film of the year. The Fabelmans won the Audience Award at TIFF.

November 23, 2022 — Devotion

Devotion, an aerial epic based on the best-selling book of the same name, stars Jonathan Majors as Jesse L. Brown, the first African-American aviator to complete the U.S. Navy’s Basic Flying Training Program and Glen Powell as U.S. Navy officer Tom Hudner. The film chronicles their partnership during the Korean War and their heroic sacrifices.

The latest Disney Animation to premiere on Thanksgiving week introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted and treacherous land alongside a motley crew.

November 23, 2022 — Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Rian Johnson is back with his first Netflix installment of the Knives Out franchise with Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. This comedic murder mystery film features a new set of suspects for Benoit Blanc to discover.

November 25, 2022 — The Son

The Son takes a closer look at a teenager's mental health when Nicholas moves in with his distant father, who has somehow moved on with his new baby and girlfriend.

November 25, 2022 — White Noise

White Noise was deemed unadaptable upon publication of the book. That’s when class screenwriter Noah Baumbach decided to tackle this hilarious yet horrifying film about a contemporary American family experiencing the mundane conflicts of everyday life in an uncertain world.
