A retrospective in honor of Academy Award-winning actress Julianne Moore, who was the special guest for Feature VII, a fundraiser benefiting Film Streams.

Upon its release in 1997, BOOGIE NIGHTS was met with widespread acclaim. Julianne Moore, who plays the troubled maternal figure, Amber Waves, earned an Academy Award nomination for her iconic performance.

Moore told culture magazine LITTLE WHITE LIES, how she came to be involved in the project: “I was at a party and someone introduced me to this young filmmaker called Paul Thomas Anderson. He would have only been 26 at the time, and he came up to me and was like, ‘You’re gonna be in my movie, man.’ He was lovely and super confident, and it was a gorgeous script. I said yes pretty much on the spot.”

Though she was confident in the film, a lot of people close to the actress were concerned about the film’s subject matter. She says, “Everyone was unsure about me doing a movie about porn. A lot of people distanced themselves from it. But I never saw it as a movie about the porn industry; I saw it as a movie about this really fascinating group of people. And it was clear to me right away that I was in the hands of a great filmmaker.”
