This animated classic follows a young Hercules on his journey to become a god. After discovering a medallion with his name ascribed on it, Hercules learns that he was found abandoned as a child and sets out on an adventure to find a place where he belongs. He makes new friends, fights new enemies and finds new love, all the while discovering that it doesn’t matter where you are, that what’s truly important is the people you are with. Hercules is riddled with hope and despair, inspiring audiences and leaving the viewer on the edge of his or her seat.

As with most Disney film this one cannot be talked about without mentioning the amazing soundtrack. This movie hosts a variety of songs, some dark and dangerous, while others light and humorous. The top track is without a doubt Go The Distance which was composed by Alan Menken. This song alone delves into the movies morals and brings out the true power of determination, highlighted by the hardships Hercules faces. Another track is The Gospel Truth 1, which is sung in a blues-esc fashion alluding at Menken’s range and skill as a composer. This film also host a variety of famous actors including James Woods (Hades) and Danny DeVito (phil). These two, with their distinguishing voices are hard to miss, creating a brilliant mix between comedy and tragedy. Hades, historically a dark and mysterious character, is given a silly and nonchalant feel from Woods voice acting. At the same time, Phil, a small satyr, proves to be a gruff, no-nonsense trainer who’s only dream is to train one of the greats.

Disney, who has backed too many films to count, has really reached for the stars with this movie. Unlike most animated Disney films in the 90’s, Hercules seems to hit in every category; leaping with love, dabbling with danger, fumbling with fear, humming with humor, advocating adventure. One scene that truly exemplifies these virtues of film is when Hercules is training with Phil. The brilliant music, excitement, and beautiful animation gives the audience a feeling of actual danger and bravery. It tells a riveting tale and teaches an unforgettable lesson (the importance of ambition). The 1990’s gave us many Disney movies, including Aladdin, Mulan, The Lion King to name a few; However the beauty and grace that surrounds Hercules makes it, still to this day, one of the greatest Disney films of all time.
