Amores Perros or “Love’s a Bitch”, is a heavy, violent yet beautiful movie that touches upon three different groups, all with their individual stories, illustrating how love catalyzes their struggles. It was hard not to fall in love with this movie. With, Alejandro González Iñárritu directing, he does an excellent job in holding up to the film’s title and exploring the hard — what would you do and what would you not do — questions for love.

The film incorporates violence in contemporary Mexico and illustrates the pervasive presence as well as the dire consequences this may have. Iñárritu shows this in a profound and distinct way, one that stretches upon different economic strata. The movie is violent, not just in how the characters clash upon another, but also in the Perros or the dogs in the film. The dog fights were so violent that its no surprise that an organization promoting animal welfare campaigned to have it banned.

There is no question that other than the brilliant narration, the movie’s outstanding soundtrack and beautiful cinematography, enabled it to garner multiple international awards ànd box office success. To think that this is a debut film for Iñárritu, undeniably one unlike any other, set the standards high for many more decades to come.
