A Colleague, Octavia Spencer, and Myself — ID Network ‘Lost Women of Highway 20’ Screening

Warner Bros. Investigation Discovery recently presented a special event screening of the first episode of the new series Lost Women of Highway 20, produced by Octavia Spencer. The audience was introduced to the case of 13-year-old Rachanda Pickle, who went missing in 1990. Connected to her gripping and sad case is another mystery — the fact that women have been going missing along the deserted Oregon highway for years, and very little has been done about it.

It was at times galvanizing and frustrating to watch. Despite being engrossed in the episode, there is also a sense of wanting to do something as you see the case unfolding. While tragic, one of the beautiful things I found about it is that, in a strange way, it is a reminder that there are always human stories to tell. Perhaps it was the sprawling scenes of the vast Oregonian wilderness, but it reminded me that presenting stories like the one we were watching is as ancient as drawings on cave walls. The need for beings to communicate, to preserve and share information. This is one of the reasons why storytelling, writing, art, film, and television are so important.

The series will premiere on November 5, 2023, at 9 p.m./8 p.m. CT. Additionally, another ID Network series produced by Octavia Spencer, FEDS, will premiere on November 8, 2023. Tune in!
