What can we learn about science, technology, and society, from science fiction movies? Quite a lot as it turns out— as long as we look beyond the sometimes-suspect science in these films, and use them as a stepping-off point for exploring emerging trends in science and technology, and grappling with the challenges and opportunities they present us with.

Science and Society

Films from the Future is a new book that sets out to do just this. The book threads together my love of science fiction movies with work on emerging technologies and socially responsible innovation, to engage and entertain readers, while encouraging them to think about the relationship between technology, and society as they discover astounding, transformative advances in science. And through the imagination and creativity of science fiction movies, it introduces some of the profound capabilities presented by new and emerging technologies, and the complex personal and societal challenges they present.

“If you love SF and want to know more about emerging technologies, this is the book to read first, and a book to return to time and again as we all navigate an uncertain future.” — Wendell Wallach, author of A Dangerous Master and co-author of Moral Machines

Behind the scenes and ahead of the curve

In this Medium publication, I’ll be sharing some of the backstory behind the book, as well as previewing its contents, providing additional information related to this, and maybe even posting some of the sections that didn’t make the final cut.

So please do bookmark us, spread the word, and check back regularly for updates.
