S.D. Darmono — Indonesian National Treasure
As one of Indonesia’s favorite sons, billionaire S.D. Darmono, the founder of Jababeka Real Estate Group and President University, has gone through many difficulties to become the astronomical success of today.
Think Big, Start Small, Move Fast
This is the title of the book written by Mr. Darmono but also his philosophy of life throughout his career development. And indeed, the Chairman of the giant Jababeka Real Estate Group, came from humble beginnings before starting his tertiary studies.
In a talk with students at President University, of which he founded, Mr. Darmono recounted his student life of determination and enthusiasm. Just a small boy from Magelang (small district of Java island) to Bandung city (Indonesia's third largest city) for college, Darmono had to make a lot of effort. After each lesson, instead of looking for leisure or relaxing, he learned foreign languages and worked in a textile factory. He also sold his own products to finance his life in the city. Although his income was low, with a work ethic second to none, Darmono carved out a path of good habits which would lead to his future success.
After 3 years of study and hard work, Mr. Darmono graduated from University with both knowledge and practical experience. His tireless efforts paid off when the British chemical company, ICI Group, took on the young Darmono with a starting salary of three times that of other graduates in Bandung. From there his career continued to grow and prosper, moving from chemicals to real estate, where he really made his mark. Although Darmono is widely known as the Founder and Chairman of the Jababeka Real Estate Group, his starting point had nothing to do with that industry.
As mentioned above, Darmono was recruited by a UK based chemical company with a remarkable salary at the time for a freshly-graduated Indonesian man. He quickly established himself and became a senior manager, a position he held for three years before returning to Indonesia in 1981. After his return, Mr. Darmono became the Chief Operating Officer of the fashion sector at PT Galic Bina Mada, until 1990. Darmono founded the Jababeka Real Estate Corporation in 1989, one of the five largest real estate firms in Indonesia. Throughout, he has held and maintained the most important positions at Jababeka: Chairman, CEO, and Executive Board Member. With his leadership skills, Jababeka has grown tremendously as well as overcoming the difficulties of the world financial crisis in 1997-1998.
Achievements
Together with his Jababeka company, Darmono has made great successes, leaving a bold mark in economic and social development, creating more jobs for the people of Indonesia. His most prominent projects include the development of the Jababeka city with an area of 5,600ha becoming the largest industrial park in Southeast Asia in 1989, Tanjung Lesung Island with an area of 1,500 hectares becoming a special economic zone in 2011, and Kendal Industrial Park with an area of 2700 hectares.
In his personal life, Mr. Darmono has also accomplished an enormous amount for the benefit of his country and fellow countrymen:
- Successfully publishing two books, "Think Big Start, Small Move Fast" and "Building a Ship While Sailing," sharing a great deal about his life, job and the history of post-war Indonesia.
- The "100-city" project which aims to maximize development resources for 100 cities, creating 100 million new jobs.
- Receiving the Best Manufacturing Enterprise Award by the EY auditing company in 2014.
- Winning the Best CEO vote held by CNBC and CEO of the Year voted by Indonesia Business Leader for 2015.
- Received a lifetime achievement award in the development of real estate from the Indonesian Industry Minister in 2015.
- Advising many large corporations in the region and the world such as IABC, PATA, and PT Pembangunan Kota Tanda Jakarta.
- Leading tourism and conservation programs, including the UNESCO World Heritage sites namely Borobudur Temple , Prambanan Temple and Ratu Boko Palace, as well as the revitalization of Jakarta’s Old City
Whatever the career development, and wherever he goes, S.D. Darmono’s greatest wish is to build and develop his homeland, Indonesia, and to help as many people in as possible.
