I recently came across an awesome feature in Google sheets. It is very flexible and easy to arrange stock portfolio the way you wanted on Google sheets.

I am not a million dollar investor. I am still experimenting with small amount of money every month.

Here are the simple steps to create stock portfolio on Google sheets.

Step 1 — Create Spread sheet

Create a new Google sheet by clicking on new sheet and name it “Stock Portfolio”

Step 2 — Create columns

Create 5 columns named Ticker Symbol, Company Name, Current Price, Quantity, Equity

Step 3 — Enter the ticker symbol

Enter the stock symbol that you like in the stock symbol column. You can get the stock symbol from yahoo finance(https://finance.yahoo.com/). In my case I have entered MSFT. It is a ticker symbol for Microsoft.

Step 4 — Get the company name

This is where the fun stuff begins. Click on the company name and type below instructions.

Type =GOOGLEFINANCE( select A2 column → Type ,“name”

your final formula should look like this

=GOOGLEFINANCE(A2,”name”)

1
2

Press enter and voila.. You should see the company name in the column.

Step 5 — Current price

Click on the Current price and type the below formula and press enter.

Type =GOOGLEFINANCE( select A2 column → Type ,“price”

Formula should look like below

=GOOGLEFINANCE(A2,”price”)

Step 6 — Enter the quantity

Enter the quantity of the shares that you own for a particular company. Let’s say I own 10 shares of Microsoft, I have entered 10. This is helpful for calculating the equity.

Step 6 — Equity calculation

Select the equity column and type the below formula

Type = → select c2 → Type * → select d2 → press enter

Formula should look like below

=C2*D2

A lot of information can be retrieved from Google finance. Here is the documentation reference if you want to experiment more with it.
