We were moving slowly in the right lane in bumper-to-bumper traffic, trying to get off the highway after a major accident shut it down a mile ahead of us.

Unsurprisingly, some smart-aleck drivers decided they shouldn’t have to wait with the rest of us.

Some drove on the right shoulder.

Others took advantage of the left lane’s being empty up to the upcoming exit, sped until they were nearly level with the (right-side) exit, and tried to force their way in between those of us driving patiently on the right.

A member of the latter species of smart-aleck forced his way in behind me.

Unfortunately, he didn’t judge correctly where the rear of my car ended and scraped the heck out of my left rear wheel, left rear quarter panel, and rear bumper cover, causing thousands of dollars’ worth of damage.

We pulled over and exchanged insurance information. Thankfully, he behaved in a civilized manner.

Of course, that ended once I filed a claim against his insurance. He told them I had cut off his right of way!
