1 min readDec 27, 2017

Cyclone Ockhi hit the Indian coast on 30th November 2017 . According to the latest official figures, the cyclone killed 74 people in Kerala and 18 in Tamil Nadu.Even though state governments have requested for central cyclone relief assistance, the process will definitely take time and would result in more loss to the victims.

This project seeks to address the issue of disaster victim assistance.Through this project we would like to study the possible impacts of basic income as a long term disaster victim support aid. The Economic Survey 2016–17 tabled in Parliament by the Union Finance Minister Shri Arun Jaitley has advocated the concept of Universal Basic Income (UBI) as an alternative to the various social welfare schemes in an effort to reduce poverty. The Survey concludes that the UBI is a powerful idea whose time even if not ripe for implementation, is ripe for serious discussion. We seek to encourage UBI as an alternative to social welfare measures through this experimental project.
