Remote worker briefcase
(100+ links and companies with remote positions).
We live in the times when there has never been easier to work remotely from home, co working space or actually anywhere in the world.
It’s not only that the tools, internet connectivity have improved but also the whole market has changed and now there are a lot of companies that offer remote positions.
To be fair remote working is kind of an extension to freelancing so some may say that it has actually been present for a long time in various creative activities such as copywriting, scriptwriting, book writing etc
You may also say that one cannot work remotely in thousand positions but it is great that where there is an opportunity for remote work there are also companies offering it. It has changed and it has changed a lot and hopefully it will still grow in coming years.
And if you are wondering why should anybody work remotely read this article by Basecamp employee Jason Zimdars or other stories by remote workers at pajamas.io
There is also a great collection of articles with tips etc on Medium by Michael Mitrakos medium.com/remotive-collection
[update: 6.04.16] Recently I cam across a two great articles about remote companies and and remote work:
Remote worker briefcase: tools & skills
You never have enough of these… the best way to find great tools it to search through ProductHunt and PH has great collections for startups:
People at Automattic do it like this:
Open communication is the fabric of any successful remote team. Automattic is no different. Their “office” consists of various communication channels including Github, Trello, Slack, Google Hangouts and their own internal tool, P2, to make sure that everything remains open, instantaneous and friendly, no matter where in the world an individual team member chooses to work from.
When you work with a distributed team, the only way you measure if they are working is on their output. Did they do what they said they would do? Where is the result of that work? Did they even say they would do anything, or have they gone dark? It’s frightening easy to notice when a distributed coworker checks out or becomes disinterested in what they’re doing…they stop communicating, they stop creating. There’s no output.

There is also a great article by Chris Messina on a so called full stack employee:
The conventional seams between disciplines are fraying, and the set of skills necessary to succeed are broader and more nebulous than they’ve been before. These days, you’ve gotta be a real polymath to get ahead; you’ve got to be a full-stack employee.
