Creative Autobiography

In case you’re doubting yourself as a creative, ask yourself these questions to reignite your inner muse.

1. What is the first creative moment you remember? Was anyone there to witness or appreciate it?

6th grade — I wrote a manuscript about the beginning of the universe. Chris, Rayme and Tory, my reading tutors, read my first drafts and gave me feedback.

2. Did anyone tell you that you were or weren’t creative/artistic when you were young? How did that affect you?

At Columbia I joined the design team for the Spectator but left after a few months because some classmates said, “you can’t really make money in the arts, try Econ to go into investment banking or consulting.”

3. When did you realize you were creative? Do you still believe you’re creative?

Mom had a bookshelf full of books and photo albums in Mexico. I took them all out, rearranged them, the photos too, and repeated this for many years.

4. What is your biggest creative ambition?

To design

5. What are the obstacles to this ambition?

Time

6. What do you believe are the vital steps to achieving this ambition?

Consitency and learning from others (I don’t have an arts background)

7. In what ways do you practice creativity regularly?

I write and read.

8. Are you satisfied with that or no? Why?

No, I can do more and with people.

9. What are your negative and positive habits with creativity? What patterns do you repeat?

Negative — I don’t have patience sometimes.

Positive — I am a dreamer.

10. Define muse? Who is your muse?

Muse = Inspiration

My muse is nature — the proof that I am not alone in this journey. There is something/someone more powerful than us who created this beauty.

11. When you work, do you love the process or the result?

I get lost in the process. I have too much fun zooming in, someone has to tap my shoulder to bring me back to the present.

It takes time for me to appreciate the result — regardless if it’s good or needs improvement.

12. Do you get impatient with “process” in life?

3 are okay. Many make life too complex and people miserable.

13. What is your ideal creative activity?

Writing and Photography

14. What is your greatest fear in your creativity? What hinders you the most?

Not being able to capture God’s beauty! I’m a perfectionist!

15. Do you self-deprecate when it comes to creativity? Why

“This is not enough” — I’m always reaching for the highest standard.

16. What do you long for in your soul the most right now?

Freedom.

17. What is your idea of mastery?

Joy.

18. What is the greatest dream in your heart?

Freedom.

19. Favorite artist or musician? Why?

Adele. Her voice is melancholic and powerful at the same time. I admire people who can balance opposites.

20. Favorite writer? Why

Jane Austen. I am a hopeless romantic. And I also appreciate her humor.
