My children and I were traveling west across the country to visit family for a week during the holidays. Although my children drive at home, they weren’t old enough to drive a rental car. This would be my first time renting a car as a solo driver. In the past, I had a husband do the driving.

As the rental company guy handed me the papers, he said that they didn’t allow snow chains on their vehicles. I didn’t know what snow chains were and asked him for clarification. He said that if we had plans to drive to the mountains, we would need snow chains. Ugh, I thought. I drive in snow all the time in New York, but our vehicles have all-wheel-drive and are equipped with snow tires. I didn’t know that was not the case everywhere in the country.

I took delivery of the rental car, and we drove to our first destination, the wine country, to meet up with the rest of the family for three nights.

After that, we planned to drive to the mountains to spend four days in Lake Tahoe, a four-hour journey by car. My brother and his family were going to rent a car, too. But they were from Singapore and faced a double whammy. First, they had to get used to driving on the opposite side of the road, and now they…
