Designs completed, prototyping next

It’s been approximately 5 weeks since we started our experiment. Today, we finished the first iteration of design across the entire site and its emails.

This took longer than I expected but I think it’s pretty good for my first time designing a full site.

Results

We wound up continuing to use Moqups for our mockup tool. I still have some grievances but we were still able to get everything done.

In the end, we had:

  • 7 screens (e.g. landing screen, settings, welcome email)
  • 3 formats (desktop/large, tablet/medium, mobile/small)

To get to this point, we made:

  • 8 paper sketches (i.e. ones done by hand)
  • 150 mockup screens, 57 of which were explored yet unused UI directions (different UI states (e.g. empty, error, ideal) and formats of said screens)

Up next

We have walked through a few user flows in our heads but it’s never the same as the final product. As a result, next we are going to build the site’s screens without any database integration (i.e. HTML/CSS/JS).

This will highlight any flaws between our mockups and the final product (e.g. bad hierarchy choices, missing UX flows).

Additionally, I want to get the designs reviewed by more seasoned designers. They should be able to catch UX errors I might have missed.
