The First Peace Summit for Ukraine: A Path to Lasting Peace
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, now entering its third year, has evolved into a prolonged struggle. This reduces the chances of a quick diplomatic solution. Many peace proposals from different countries and experts have often ignored Ukraine’s own views and needs. This oversight risks sidelining Ukraine’s vision for peace and the future.
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has developed a 10-point peace plan known as “Ukraine’s Peace Formula.” This plan reflects Ukraine’s perspective on achieving a fair and lasting peace.
The Peace Formula aims to:
- Withdraw all Russian troops from Ukraine.
- Punish those responsible for war crimes.
- Restore Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
- Release all prisoners of war and deportees.
- Prevent environmental damage (ecocide) in Ukraine.
- Ensure energy security, food security, and nuclear safety.
Over the past few months, Ukraine has actively sought support for this plan from countries worldwide. More than 100 countries have already supported Ukraine’s Peace Formula. Ukrainian authorities have high hopes for the first Peace Summit in Switzerland on June 15–16, 2024. They aim to unite the international community around a just peace for Ukraine.
The Peace Summit will provide a platform for discussions on how to achieve a comprehensive and lasting peace in Ukraine, in line with the UN Charter and international law. Respect for these principles is a key requirement for participation in the event. At the summit, participants will discuss and refine the peace plan based on the Zelenskyy Peace Formula through thematic working groups or conferences.
The Ukraine’s Peace Formula offers several benefits:
- It upholds the UN Charter, aiming to stop the aggression against Ukraine and its consequences. This approach could become a model to prevent future aggressions against other countries.
- It allows each country to play a leading role in restoring peace, promoting independent efforts in peacebuilding.
- It fosters a new global tradition of unity, where helping one country stop a war teaches us how to end all wars.
The first Peace Summit for Ukraine marks an important step towards achieving a just and lasting peace. By supporting Ukraine’s Peace Formula, the international community can work together to create a better future for Ukraine and the world.
