Imagine yourself being all warm and cozy in bed, sleeping soundly, and then you’re woken abruptly to the sound of tones going off next to you. Your pager going off meaning someone is in need of your help. No matter what time of day or night, whether its 100 or 0 degrees, snowing or raining — someone needs you. You rush out of bed, throw some clothes on, run to your vehicle and drive as safely and as fast as you can to the fire house. Once you are there, you throw on all of your gear in less than 30 seconds, get to the trucks and you’re on your way.

This is my life as a Firefighter.

My name is Keegan Brown, and I am 22 years old. While attending college, I am also part of the Heyworth Fire Department — otherwise known as Randolph Township. I have been a member of this department for almost a year. Although this may not be a whole lot of time to some people — I’m here to tell you time has no effect on fire service.

While being a member of the department, I’ve seen everything from big fires, to helping get someone out of bed. There is no telling when you hear those tones, what you are possibly going to see and get yourself into. Being in the fire service, there are of course many pros and cons. Now as you can imagine, the pros heavily outweigh the cons. No matter what time of day or night, cold or hot — yes you probably will suffer, but there is no better feeling than helping someone in need, or someone who cannot help themselves.

While not everyone would fill the boots of a firefighter, I am proud to serve my community and will continue to do so until the day comes where I cannot stand tall. Hopefully this is will help all homeowners and their families prepare incase a fire were to ever happen.
