Go The Distance Day 55
(To the camp staff)
If AYC were to last roughly two months, what would your reaction/response be?
Isaac Huang / Design + Creative Workshop
“Lol. Might as well call it a Summer Camp.”
*minutes later*
“I change my answer. Sleep deprived.”
Ong Ken-Jeen / Bible Quiz + Camp Nurse + Physical Jerk
“No.”
*minutes later*
“Actually it’s possible, everyone take turns to be camp staff. One group do one week lol. Then can switch roles. So when we done our job for the week, we become campers. Then the other campers become camp staff for the next week.”
Jesher Lim / Photographer
“Why two months long?”
Sarah Khoo / Finance + PR + Discipline + Counsellor
“It would be so fun because we all get to boss everyone around for so long!”
Lester Wan / Creative Workshop + Camp Nurse + Physical Jerk
“HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA”
I guess we’ll just stick to the usual 5 days then… Unless you follow Ken-Jeen’s idea, of course.
Moving on!
Icebreakers was led by Jon A because it was his birthday - his punishment.
In under one breath, I shall attempt to type the rules out while you try to read them aloud. ONE BREATH! Ready? I’m not. GO!
- Never have I ever with a twist — instead of having one person in the middle, everyone must have 10 fingers up like so:
- The person whose turn is up has to say something he/she hasn’t done. Anyone who has done it, will have to drop a digit. Last three to have any digits left up in the game wins a prize.
There. It wasn’t all that difficult, isn’t it? Wasn’t even a challenge holding breaths. Should have tried not blinking instead.
I love this game. You’ll be able to see which guy in firebrands has worn a skirt before, and which underage persons have driven a car or a motorbike before. Such rebels.
Next we had worship led by Joshua Tan. Let’s see if you can guess the song titles — GO!
- You turned my mourning into dancing. You turned my sorrow into joy!
- Everlasting, Your light will shine when all else fades. Neverending, Your glory goes beyond all fame…
- I know Your fire can hurt, but I will be worse here without You…
- If faith can move the mountains, let the mountains move…

You read that caption right. Her title was #GOTHEDISTANCE. I went through great pains in counting the days from December 14 2015 till February 6 2016 and it was 55 days. *Cue camp staff groans*
To go the distance in this context is to pursue or to chase God.
Each of us is at a different level in our walk with God — however, the main point here is to at least make an effort to go the distance.
There is a difference between knowing God and knowing about God. The former is about being at an intimate and personal level with God, to have a first-hand account of who He is. To know about God, however, is to just hear about it from another person without knowing for oneself.
For the younger ones reading this and thinking, “Hmmm. I’m just 13. Maybe God won’t pay attention to me yet until I’m older…” or something like that, know that it isn’t true. God desires to know everyone regardless of age and regardless of how far one has come in their walk with Him.
John 17:3 speaks of “eternal life” and to have it requires a personal understanding of God. It is amazing to think that in His largeness, He is still very much interested to have a personal relationship with us everyday! That is a love that never dies and one that is ever patient, if you think about it.
1 Samuel 16:7 (Samuel anoints David)
David was the youngest of the 8 sons of Jesse. Jesse probably didn’t consider David worthy to be mentioned before Samuel, a prophet of great renown. All the 7 other sons were brought before Samuel and were rejected despite having great qualities. God finally told Samuel to anoint David after he was brought out to him.
1 Samuel 17:32–37 (David and Goliath)
Saul contrasted David and Goliath, weighing out the chances — David was a young man, while Goliath was a warrior trained from his youth. In other words, you’re asking an ant to go against an elephant. Other metaphors work too, but you get the idea. David won anyhow.
These two chapters outline one significant truth — God doesn’t look at the outward appearance but at the heart.
You may wonder that these stories of the Bible took place more than just mere centuries ago. However, allow me to reassure you that the God we worship was, is and will be the same God. Past, present or future doesn’t change God. The opposite happens instead. So, that same God that led Joshua to bring down the walls of Jericho, David to kill Goliath and Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego to walk freely amongst the fires is the same God that watches over you and I at the present time.
“But how do I get to know God?”
John 1:1 — In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the word was God.
That Word was given to us in the Bible. It contains the truth that you need. We would be able to know God’s character through the pages of the Bible if we pay close attention.
fireBRANDS got its name, meaning one that is passionate about a particular cause. So here’s a challenge — go find the answers and may it lead to an adventure backed by God:
What are you passionate about?
What is your first goal?
What relationship is one you treasure?
Remember, age does not matter (1 Timothy 4:12). David, as a teenager, had an anointing as king of Israel because he had a close relationship with God.
That is all for the week’s post. God bless you.
