Over the last 30 years, the US market has attracted thousands of international technology companies and, today, Silicon Valley, San Francisco, New York, Boston, Seattle and other innovation hubs across the USA continue to attract international entrepreneurs.

Indeed, every year, 3,000 tech companies from Europe and Asia establish a subsidiary in, or move to, the USA. Some of them succeed, many do not quite make it, but they all tackle formidable challenges that are unique to international companies.

With so much business activity, I have always found surprising how little research and factual data is available about the challenges that international technology companies face and the strategies they adopt when entering the US market, specifically.

That’s why we set out to explore those challenges and the strategies of international tech companies employ with our 2014 FireMatter Views Survey.
We conducted this one-year research project interviewing dozens of entrepreneurs face-to-face and surveying 200+ companies from Germany, Italy, Russia, India, UK, Spain, Israel… 44 countries in total.

This report summarizes the results of our research and hopefully represents a modest contribution to help international tech entrepreneurs and executives succeed in tapping into the largest technology market in the world.
