Leena Dawra from Matunga West shares her experience with First Crayon (www.firstcrayon.com) of finding her niece’s first school.

How did you decide at what age to send your child to their first school?

From what I have seen, children between 2 to 3 years of age learn very quickly. My niece started grasping and understanding concepts quite young. Seeing this, we thought it was the right time to put her in a preschool that enhances her development.

What were your information sources during the preschool search process? Which source was the most valuable?

We depended on friends’ and relatives’ advice and experience while choosing a preschool. One of my friend’s daughter used to attend the same preschool. After receiving a positive review from her, we decided to choose the same preschool.

What were your 3 most important factors while choosing a preschool? Why?

Outdoor activities, learning techniques and atmosphere are the three factors that we thought were important in our preschool search. Outdoor activities make learning fun and introduce children to social interaction that is generally less available at home. The right learning techniques are important for her to grasp concepts quickly and more accurately. It is our belief that a friendly atmosphere helps a child to learn better so we actively looked for it.

What is the one thing that you feel you did really well during your preschool search, and other mothers should learn from you?

We chose a preschool with a focus on good quality teachers. If the teachers are friendly, they keep the children comfortable and happy. They use innovative and creative techniques to teach the children, ensuring an easy grasp of concepts and well-rounded development.

What changes do you see in your child after going to preschool?

My niece has an easier time grasping concepts at home and outside preschool as well. She has become a more diligent learner. She has also developed a curiosity, and is always seeking ways to learn more about the world around her.

What is your most important tip for parents to prepare their child and themselves for the first day of preschool?

If you child cries on the first day of the preschool (which is totally normal), don’t panic. You need to learn to be tough. This is a natural process that all children need to go through. Let them adapt at their own pace.
