Prince: For You

PRINCE. FINALLY. FINALLLYYYYY.
For You was released just shy of 40 years ago, but Prince’s voice is so incredible and engaging that it completely transports the songs into the current day. That’s the case even when the music didn’t age well —and let’s be honest, those sound effects on “Crazy You” were never going to last.
But even when the music sounds dated, it never sounds stale. He plays around with so many styles here (funk, ballads, disco, rock) and doesn’t linger on any of them long enough for that to happen. Given he was someone who dabbled in so much throughout his lifetime, I guess that shouldn’t have come as a surprise.
One thing I noticed though, was that while I enjoyed the album a great deal, I found that not many of the songs stuck in my head after listening. He wasn’t going for hooks here, and I’m curious to see if that changes over the course of his discography.
Soundtrack To: Getting married in the bathroom; honeymoon on the dance floor; divorced by the end of the night.
