Real Estate: In Mind
Throughout their discography, Real Estate has developed a sound reminiscent of a slow day in a New Jersey suburb: the sonic equivalent of the first act in a coming-of-age movie. On In Mind, however, they tinker with it a bit and come up with a sound more reminiscent of a slow day at the Jersey shore: the sonic equivalent of the first act in a slightly off-kilter coming of age movie.
But while the music sounds sunnier, it doesn’t necessarily sound better — or really even all that different — from their previous records. The best that can be said about Real Estate is that they sustained themselves. The worst that can be said about Real Estate is that they repeated themselves. In either case, there really hasn’t been much of the requisite growth needed to advance themselves beyond where they were after Atlas.
Real Estate is very good at what they do and they have carved out a peaceful, New Jersey-sized lane for themselves in the indie rock scene. Hopefully all those slow days start to make them restless for something new, and we can get on with the second act.
