5 things I learned during the 2017 Australia GP Qualifying Session

Formula 1 is back baby! So happy that I get to wake up at odd hours of the night, ruin my sleep schedule for two days then be miserable for the first two days of the work week again. This year on First Lap Nutcase I thought instead of doing the big FLN Reports after every race weekend I’d just kinda revisit qualifying and race after they happen with this format of “X things I learned” where X is 1–99. That being said let’s kick things off!

1. Marcus Ericsson isn’t very good…or Antonio Giovinazzi is really good.

After Pascal Wehrlein was declared “unfit” to race this weekend Sauber called up 2016 GP2 Runner up Giovinazzi up to race this weekend for them and he qualified 16th and only 2 tenths slower than his teammate who qualified 15th. Giovinazzi also ALMOST beat him as he almost got into Q2 and probably would have if not for a lest second screw up that made him abort the lap. The real amazing thing is that Giovinazzi had very very little time in the car, the only time he drove it was in T1 back in Barcelona and this morning before qualifying. We keep hearing all about what monsters these new cars are and to have a kid come off the street and with very little work put up competitive times and ALMOST beat his most experienced teammate is very impressive. This doesn’t bode well for Ericsson who back since the Caterham days has been the “top guy on a bad team”, I personally already expected him to look bad next to Wehrlein but this Qualifying performance may put him in the hot seat a lot sooner. This is all just a hot take and the result of people chomping on the bit after months of no F1 action, we gotta have some drama right?

2. Max Verstappen is still a cry baby

This dude couldn’t wait ONE race not even ONE before he started complaining about his teammate. He said the following on team radio “ “Never send me out again after Daniel, it’s too slow.”

Yeah, ok buddy.

Just hope we’re not in for a looooooong year of this. I know the Europeans are all excited that this might be the new “Nico/Lewis rivalry” but this isn’t a rivalry this is a kid complaining. If you want racetrack drama go watch Nascar dudes swing punches and land exactly .5 of them.

3.Nico Rosberg doesn’t JUST bought a TV

Look at my Nico there, looks good right? He doesn’t have to deal with diets, no more travelling all the time. He can sit in the comfort of his multi million dollar home and watch the race on a nice UHD TV, except he can’t right? What do you see there? Remember the first time you bought a TV and didn’t have furniture for it? That’s exactly what this is. That’s a coffee table, Nico. That’s not a TV stand man. Also you’re gonna have cables all over the place dude. This can only mean one thing, Nico didn’t have a TV prior to this weekend. Also his wife is probably gonna be pissed at how he messed up the living room’s decorations, welcome to real life buddy.

4. Jolyon Palmer is apparently driving a Toyota Yaris

If you think Verstappen is a cry baby, check out this guy:

“The brakes are terrible, the balance is pretty horrible and the traction is terrible.”

Yeah dude, it’s still an F1 car come on. You put it in last place and Hulkenberg put the same car in 12th. Oh you’re complaining because it’s put back together in a hurry and things are off? Here’s an idea buddy, don’t crash.

5. Fernando Alonso is still very very very very good.

13th place with a Honda on the back. I swear Alonso is the best.
