Decision Time
Marly’s first night as head physician
In that single moment of decision, she felt the weight of the universe. She glanced over at Greg, one of the nurses in the emergency room. He glanced down at his watch.
“I need your answer. Time is running out. If you don’t decide, it’s going to be too late.”
The ER had been slammed all night. Her back hurt and the beginning of a headache was slowly inching its way up the back of her head. Marly stepped back to let Dr. Ancho get past where the group of them stood. With all eyes on her, sweat started beading on her forehead.
“Marly, we’ve got four rooms with patients waiting as well as a full lobby. We can’t afford to waste any more time waiting for your decision. What’s it going to be?”
She bit her lip as she thought over the options. Dr. Ancho glared at her as he pushed past her, knocking the clipboard out of her hands. Oh man. If she messed this up, he was going to have her head. Marly bent down and scooped it up.
An alarm sounded down the hall and a blue light off to the right started flashing. “That’s it. We’re out of time. Since she can’t decide, I’ll make the decision,” Nan, the head nurse said.
“You can’t.” Greg replied. “Marly is head physician on duty so she is responsible for making the call…
