Forget a Silver spoon…

The Scoop is in the Heart of Gold

Ask any Chef Today…

They will tell you we have a huge disconnect between people and food when it comes to this current generation of cooks. And there is no easy answer to it. I’ve been out of the business for over 2 years now “officially” … and am still soaking up a clear approach that will help us change it going forward. Much of it has to do with our belief in how our economics should work…. Which often creates a “must do, live or die” environment. Even more so, the old school approach we often take to how we treat people. But that is for another time and place if it comes to pass.

Today is a Different Day…

Today is about a fellow who inspired me every time we spoke. Its a damn shame we never got a chance to have that beer in person we always talked about… but the next one I have I’m sure to dedicate it to him. I spent what I believe is 15+ years in kitchens and rarely saw a soul as curious and passionate as he… about not just food… but the entire experience!

Danny Owen cared about life… down to the fine details and how we spiced it up.

He wasn’t looking for a cure… he just went out and did it! And let the cure find him.

When he was between a rock and a hard place he “grinded” his way out and made slurry of the stones!

I had a conversation about “commercial” kitchens these days… and as gentle and nice as he was; I could feel the same kind of subtle aggravation in his tone about how he couldn’t make a career out of it because no one would walk around with the same passion, love, and focus everyday as him… and it just drove him nuts! Haha… it makes me chuckle NOW the same it did then. He may have not been a ninja from our dojo… but he was housing a soul of a samurai!

The love and attention he gave food was the same he brought to life… through his life. It was bright… colorful… and caring.

One of the greatest things we pride ourselves in as Chefs is being able to improvise and make something great out of something ordinary. He could do this too…

His eye for food came from his heart for all living life…

Doing for us… learning even while at the head of the class…

Reminding us to treat even death with love and compassion…and attention…

That even death is life… and so he reminds me once again as his huge Heart decided it needed to shock the world one last time!

Live on My Friend… live on

The flames can never die… but today the heart of the house simply admires the pilot of them.

There is so much more I want to write here as I sit typing from my IPhone taking in all the conversations we had, not just about food, but my friends gentle approach to life. How just last week we had a some what philosophical transfer over a life perspective that seemed so full of life! Yet I do what my heart speaks and say…

Let Danny’s light shine through him. Please take time to admire the soul he put into what he shared with the world. Click the link at the top of the page and give a gander at what none of the world should miss out on. Thank you so much for reading and please share if it moves you. Honestly… he asked me for tips; but his stuff usually looked better than mine! Lol
