Top Tips For Your Next Dota 2 In-House
In-house games can be an incredibly fun environment to play in where players can form fun bonds within a community and learn from another to help become better players. With many amateur tournaments, pick-up scrims, and fun community events on the horizon, here is a few tips and tricks to make the most out of an in-house (or really any Captain’s Mode related) events.
Before the match starts, take five minutes to get acquainted with your team members. Things that will be important to discuss in the first few phases are:
What is the MMR spread of the players?
Are you able to do a complicated draft?
Does someone identify as a shot caller?
Will someone need to “step up” who has never done this before?
Is there some flexibility between what roles people play?
Can people play more than just carry?
Does everyone have a microphone?
Communication is key!
From here, my general rule of thumb is to have each player on the team specify three or four heroes they would want to play to see if there is some sort of cohesive strategy across the five player’s general interests.
The approach of drafting around heroes and strategies with them rather than around people who identify playing specific “role positions” will allow your new ad-hoc team to perform better together.
While it is up to the team themselves on deciding who should be the button pusher for drafting or the one who is consistently calling the shots in the game, it is important to identify these things before going into the game rather than surprising someone who was not expecting it.
Once you are in the game, have the more experienced players recommend warding locations for early game play, the laning, and have the shot caller for the team specify the item priorities he would like to see various players getting (i.e. Mekansm, Pipe, or Blink Dagger priority for instance).
Across the game it will be the duty of the shot caller and the more experienced players to help guide their fellow teammates to the proper item selection, the objectives they are taking, or any strategies they may want to undergo.
Having good vision will be just one of many variables in order to triumph, so explain to your allies where the best place to keep your vision is and defend your ancient!

#SocialSunday is a bi-weekly social tournament that I host for FirstBlood.io were players sign up as individuals and are thrown into random teams balanced by MMR and role preference. This is the perfect environment to test out your ability to adapt to, and work cooperatively with, a group of strangers in order to win in a competitive environment. The teams that win are the ones that sort out their roles and communication early on in the day.
Signups for #SocialSunday5 are on now, check out the FirstBlood community forums for more details.
