In 2008, working on then-Senator Obama’s Presidential campaign, I learned what being part of a startup meant. I worked side-by-side with organizers willing to knock on doors all day in sub-zero January temperatures, log data all night, and go to sleep at 3 a.m. next to stacks of pizza boxes under their desks.

That experience showed me what a group of truly committed people could accomplish. County by county, city by city, and voter by voter, volunteers and staff worked through long days and short nights to register new voters and promote civic participation. I’ll never forget the feeling of being part of a movement of new American voters and citizens.

Presidential politics aren’t the only thing that matters, though — state and local government can have an even greater impact on a voter’s daily life. Serving on the school board in Montgomery County taught me how important individual political participation and civic engagement can be. As a 17-year-old, I tried my best to champion the interests of students and communities in my home state of Maryland. Tens of thousands of people across the country serve in similar capacities, from local school boards and town councils to Congress and the White House.

This is where the technology industry comes in. The incredible success of many companies in our industry has given us more prominence than ever before in the political process. And with that success comes greater responsibility. We owe our communities a lot, and we can begin to repay that debt with one simple act: casting a ballot.

In many ways, we built FiscalNote around the same ideal. One of our main goals is to engage more voices in the policy process to bring much-needed transparency to our government. As part of that effort, we have committed to giving FiscalNoters the day off of work to vote. We hope that you’ll join us.

Now, it’s your turn to take part and prepare yourself to vote.

Many thanks to Hunter Walk for spearheading this initiative and the hundreds of other companies who have made a similar commitment.
