FiscalNote’s Sustainability & Social Impact Efforts

FiscalNote today announced its second annual corporate Sustainability overview, “Our Progress Toward a Sustainable Future: FiscalNote’s Sustainability & Social Impact Efforts,” which outlines related programs and efforts for the 2022 calendar year.

In a related post published in October 2022 — FiscalNote’s ESG Journey is Going Public — I introduced our global organization’s social impact and sustainability efforts and provided some historical context. In this year’s post, I’ll share updates related to the continuation of our journey.

FiscalNote’s 2022 overview encompasses the following areas: Environmental Sustainability (including emissions and Scope reporting), Social Initiatives (including Corporate Social Responsibility & Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging & Accessibility), Governance (including ethics, privacy, and compliance), and the company’s sustainability focus for 2023.

As we reflect on our progress thus far, I’d like to share some of my insights and observations from the past year, comparing our 2021 and 2022 efforts.

Insights & Observations

  • We took a more collaborative and disciplined approach for the 2022 overview, detailing our project management, prioritizing, and committing to publish by the end of 1H 2023. The 2022 overview is being published four months ahead of the timeline it took the 2021 overview to be published.
  • This is despite an increased number of stakeholders involved in the process, e.g., FiscalNote made a number of acquisitions in 2021 that were not included in our previous overview, and for the 2022 overview, we worked with them to analyze their environmental footprint across their Scope 1, 2, and in some categories Scope 3 emissions.
  • We continued to progress in DEIBA and Business Ethics efforts, with refreshed internal committees and attention on both topics.
  • From a perspective of how ESG has evolved, there was a significant increase in global attention from all stakeholder groups, especially around government. The hypothesis I had five years ago was that ESG would eventually be regulated has started coming true, and the trend does not seem to be reversing. FiscalNote has continued to invest in its ESG Solutions in anticipation of this, and I see a tremendous opportunity to help organizations with their efforts to understand and comply with ESG in the coming years.

  • As we move into our second decade (FiscalNote just celebrated its 10th anniversary on June 11, 2023!), I am excited to see what the future holds for FiscalNote and its sustainability efforts and ESG Solutions.
