Fishcoin and Salmon in Norway — Norfishing 2018 Trondheim
The weather in Trondheim in August is typically the best you will see in this part of the world and this beautiful place is a stunning backdrop for the world’s largest seafood companies to meet and show their wares at Norfishing (this year) and AquaNor in alternating years. And next year Norway will host the Our Oceans conference (in Bali this year Oct 29–30).
Norway utilises its seafood industry excellence to provide capacity building related to fisheries and aquaculture in many developing countries, ie a new research vessel — Dr. Fridtjof Nansen –financed by Norway, conducts stock assessments and other types of research for the benefit of developing countries.
I was visiting Trondheim to discuss the Fishcoin project with suppliers and partners, many of whom I have known for over 17 years — the salmon industry is diverse but very small. Blockchain is a new concept and one which the Norwegian seafood industry is eager to embrace to stay on the cusp of innovation, and they recognise the importance of traceability and also the age-old challenge to manage trust between competitors, suppliers, government and NGOs.
The salmon farming industry is typically seen as the model of sustainability for the aquaculture industry as if they have it all figured out. And in general terms they have impressive achievements and are continuing to strive for sustainability with high standards of environmental monitoring, health management, food safety, traceability and feed development. However, they are not standing still and continue to embrace new technology like blockchain to counter the ever present sustainability challenges in the industry.
