The FV Lauren Maya about to start fishing for Western King Prawns, Spencer Gulf, South Australia

The great people behind Kolega Fisheries have been working with a number of the Fishcoin and Eachmile team members for decades. They were the first company in Southern Hemisphere to use Oregon State University's FishTrax traceability system that allows consumers to see the story of how their prawns got from the sea to their table.

Who are Kolega Fisheries?

With a story rich in hope, sacrifice and adventure, the Kolega family immigrated to Australia in 1959 from Croatia, establishing their company in the early 1960’s to become part of a group of pioneering South Australian fishermen.

The company owns two modern prawn vessels, that are members of the Spencer Gulf and West Coast Prawn Fishermen’s Association - an organisation highly respected throughout Australia known for managing the fishery in partnership with the South Australian Government. The fishery became the first prawn fishery in the Asia Pacific Region and the first King Prawn Fishery in the world to gain Marine Stewardship Council certification for sustainability.

The MSC certified prawns are pulled live from the sea and frozen within one hour.

The Western King Prawns (Melicertus latisulcatus)are harvested straight from ocean in the southern most prawn fishery in the world. These very cold, clear waters of the Southern Ocean produce a prawn of the highest quality and full of flavour.

Why are they a Fishcoin partner?

Kolega Fisheries are passionate about sustainability and quality. They employ best practices and the latest refrigeration technology on their boats. Always looking at ways to innovate, the team at Kolega Fisheries want to collect as much data from their operation as possible - from the time their nets hit the water to the time their prawns hit your plate.

They also realise that partnerships, both with supply chain stakeholders and input providers, are critical to improve not only the quality of the end product but the overall environmental and economic performance of the whole supply chain. Kolega Fisheries recognise that incentivising data collection through their known and existing supply chains via Fishcoin tokens is an exciting prospect, but they are also excited by the prospect of meeting and collaborating with those stakeholders in supply chains that buy (and will buy) their product that they are yet to meet, and that a Fishcoin ecosystem could introduce.
