The first time our team spoke with Peter Sol Rogers, CEO of Sol Mar Advisors, he was in a bunker in Somalia with sounds of gunfire in the background. Peter and the team at Sol Mar Advisors are the epitome of an ideal partner in the Fishcoin ecosystem. They have significant on the ground experience working firsthand (in the bunker so to speak) with fishers and fish farmers, while also keeping a finger on the pulse of the broader issues and trends that are shaping new opportunities in the regions they work. Their team has experience in Asia and Africa, at each node within seafood supply chains. Currently their focus is in Kenya where we are already in discussions about deploying Fishcoin powered applications to collect data in order to open up new export markets to the growing Kenyan blue economy.

Who are Sol Mar Advisors (from their presentation)?

Our technical experts support our partners on issues such as Regional and Global Trade Policy, Feasibilities Studies, Business Plans, Equipment and Construction Costings, Cold Storage Facility Start-ups, Fishing Jetty Design, International Market Linkages, Operations and Value Chain Compliance Systems. In addition to our donor funded projects, Sol Mar Advisors offers private sector stakeholders an enhanced perspective of the unique industry drivers and market dynamics that shape global fisheries value chains. plan for critical on-shore infrastructure projects, build market intelligence and develop trade policy strategies. Sol Mar Advisors is made up from a team of experts with a long-history working the Fisheries Private Sector.

From Seychelles to Somalia, Tanzania to Taiwan, Kiribati to Kenya and Mauritius to Mozambique. Sol Mar experts have been involved with nearly all the major fishing enterprises activities in the East Africa region from processors, to boats, to cold chain, to finished goods.

Why are they Fishcoin partners?

Regional, on the ground know-how is essential to the success of Fishcoin. As one of our advisors, Duncan Leadbitter, has said, “we can have all the technology in the world, but without getting it in the hands of the many fishers around the world we won’t achieve much.” This is why the network of team members, advisors and partners that are part of Fishcoin is so important. It is not just our partner network, but their networks within fishing and aquaculture communities worldwide that will enable Fishcoin to achieve the kind of massive scale to really increase the volume and velocity of data in global seafood supply chains. We’re in this to move the needle on sustainable seafood and for that we need scale, which means on the ground partners like Sol Mar. Truly, wherever there is an ocean, there is an opportunity for a partner with local fisheries expertise to collaborate with Fishcoin.
