In September, the Fishcoin team was in Burbank at Warner Bros. Studios for the GSMA Board of Mobile World Congress Americas 2018. As part of the GSMA Better Future Reception, we hosted a Storied Seafood event where we shared our vision for leveraging mobile networks to provide airtime incentives for fishers and farmers to share data. Fishcoin team member Jayson Berryhill presented to the audience, which included GSMA Board Members and other mobile industry leaders, followed by Chef Feniger discussing the importance of chefs having access to data about the food they are serving.

Chef Feniger and the team at Border Grill, together with Kathryn Sweeney and the team at Warner Bros. Food Services treated us like part of the family. We were able to provide Chef Feniger with the species that we are trading for them to create a menu featuring our Wild Alaskan Salmon, New York Family Farmed Steelhead and Chemical Free Wild Louisiana Gulf Shrimp.

Connectivity, Chefs and Sustainable Seafood

It is increasingly important for chefs to be connected to the sources of the seafood sold in their restaurants. According to Oceana, seafood fraud is the practice of misleading consumers about their seafood in order to increase profits. In an effort to combat seafood fraud, Oceana created the “One Name, One Fish” initiative in an effort to help stop seafood fraud, deter illegal fishing, improve seafood tracking, protect endangered or vulnerable species, improve food safety and improve livelihoods of honest fishers.

Our goal is to establish connections between chefs and seafood sources to enable data sharing from sea to table. Most of the world’s fishers live in developing and emerging markets, which is why mobile network operators are critical for establishing connections. Furthermore, mobile airtime is the ideal incentive to reward fishers for sharing data.

Business Case for Mobile Networks

Fishcoin’s partners from Veriown Global presented the opportunity for mobile network operators. The vision for the partnership is to provide chefs with a connection to sources of their seafood and work with GSMA mobile network operator members to enable incentives for seafood producers to share information across supply chains. Fishers and fish farmers are typically limited by their incomes in how much mobile airtime they can afford. By enabling Fishcoin to offer mobile airtime or pre-paid solar energy as an incentive for fishers and farmers to share data, mobile network operators dramatically increase their market opportunity within these communities.
