Sleep,
You slip and slither
Into the darkest shadows of night
Just beyond my reach,
Snorting and snickering
At my soft supplications
And pitiful prayers,
Leaving me unsettled,
Strung out and shaken,
Counting the ticks and
Numbering the tocks.
As darkness diminishes
And shadows soften,
You slide into
Your sanctuary -
Sniggering at my
Swollen lids
Tittering at my
Teetering gait
Until tonight
When again I
Dance with the
Devil.

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
