Day 1 of my road trip is in the books! Nothing was planned except breakfast, lunch and a visit to LA Fitness. 1 out of 3 is a pretty good average I think. First and foremost, Charleston is beautiful and as far as I can tell has a very underrated food scene. I watched the sunrise from White Point Gardens and admired Fort Sumpter in the distance.

Alas I made my trek to the amazing glazed gourmet donut shop (http://glazedgourmet.com) and picked up a pair of donuts and a coffee! Honestly this donut shop and “Husk” were the main reason my roadtrip took a right hand turn at Savannah, Ga.

Husk ended up being a deadend as I managed to visit on a rather unfortunate day. Husk shut down lunch and dinner service this week for “remodeling.”

A quick Yelp search led me to a wonderful revaluation at “Eli’s Kitchen.” The meal was incredulous even though the bartender attempted to talk me into a different meal, my new goal is to replicate the meal in my own kitchen at home.

As for the city, the downtown is packed tightly with well restored ancient structures built in an era where the automobile was not even a fantasy. As beautiful as the downtown district is, clearly as you move west you quickly cross an imaginary boundary separating unflashy wealth and severe poverty. The poverty depressed my spirits, a field was filled with homeless in tents, and dozens stood on a few street corners. As I got on the bridge to cross over to Mount Pleasant I witnessed another popular subpopulation of Charleston, the runners crossing the bridge! It seems the whole city jogs or bikes, everywhere I went in town (except across the poverty line) I saw running shorts and sports bras.

Alas real life caught up with me and it was time to pick up a slice of pizza grab a nap and do a few hours of home work before stepping out to have 2 beverages with my new friends before retiring to my room with a book. I am sad I don’t have weeks to explore every restaurant and all the parks in this wonderful town but I will keep it in mind when looking for my next job!
