One of my favorite Medium prompts in 2017 was the Photo A Day Challenge by alto on CROSSING GENRES. The daily commitment that required paying close attention to my environment created fertile ground for self-awareness and reflection.

Today Tre L. Loadholt had a music prompt Tell Me about Your Favorite Instrument that took me out of my head, where I am slaving over numbers and IRS deadlines, and into a special heart place where only music rests.

Here is my post in response to her prompt:

Dwelling in my left brain this time of year leaves me feeling hollow and depleted. In my numerical haze, I forget the joys of life that can add substance and meaning to the drudgery. Tre’s music prompt spurred me to listen to music as I labored the day away, and I was once again reminded that there are small things we can do to make our days, even the unimaginative, dull, and wearying ones, brighter and sweeter. Music also provides a type of mediation when I don’t have time to devote to going inward in a formal tradition.

And, that has led me to a new daily, or maybe nearly daily, practice on Medium of posting a music video each day, or every couple of days. Maybe this practice will last a year, maybe a month, but I hope long enough to help me create a habit of making music a part of my days.

Here is my inaugural music video:

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
