Sex & hugs & sausage rolls — the stuff that dreams are made of

Award-winning Devon pie and pasty maker launches sexy new range of sausage rolls in celebration of its 10th Birthday

In the hope of reigniting the nation’s passion for this classic lunchtime and picnic snack, the award-winning food producer Chunk of Devon has launched three scrumptious new flavours: Pork apple and scrumpy (to reflect the company’s Devonian roots), pork and chorizo (because it’s de rigeur at the moment) and a breakfast version with sun-dried tomatoes, egg and gammon (just because it tastes awesome and was wolfed down the first time it was made). As well as the three new flavours, Chunk will be re-launching its original Chunki sausage roll — a Great Taste, Taste of the West and Food & Drink Award Winner.

The sausage rolls will be available from February, just in time for a romantic indoor picnic on Valentine’s Day. Winner of over 70 national and regional accolades, including a 2015 Taste of the West Silver Award for its Chunki Sausage Roll, Chunk is passionate about producing the highest standard of products packed with quality ingredients and lovingly made at its factory in Ottery St Mary, Devon.

King of the sausage roll, and Chunk head hunk, Simon Bryon-Edmond, says: “From the off we were determined not to short-change our customers, making sure our sausage rolls were a chunky affair, with real shoulder meat, just the right amount of sage, onion, herbs and spices and all wrapped up in a cracking buttery ruff puff pasty. We won’t stint on quality ingredients and we feel this is why our products are worth falling in love with.

“From its origins as a simple butcher’s snack, the sausage roll has been on a bit of a roller coaster ride through the years. It first gained mass popularity when manufacturers married the fine art of puff pastry making with machinery that made it less temperamental and much cheaper to produce. However, with the ever-increasing demand to make a perfect-looking product, combined with the need to make it cheaper and cheaper, manufacturers started reducing the fat content of sausage rolls and introducing chemicals and other undesirables into the sausage, so they became bright pink meat concoctions packed with chemicals encased in pale, flavourless pastry. Chunk have always placed great importance making sausage rolls that stay true to their roots as a delicious, flavour-filled savoury snack encased in the most mouthwateringly buttery puff pastry.”

Each Chunk sausage roll is lovingly handmade in Devon and are a far cry from the pale and tasteless imitations that can be found in chiller cabinets across the UK. With public opinion moving back to opting for food quality ingredients and flavour, Chunk’s new sausage roll range will no doubt gain its fair share of new and returning fans. Simon comments: “Our sausage rolls have that classic homemade trickle and this naturally adds to their appeal and for this reason, they have become a legend in their own lunch hour — the Bugatti Veyron of the sausage roll world.”

Chunk has been rewarded with numerous accolades for its Chunki sausage roll, such as winning Silver in the 2015 Taste of the West Awards and Great Taste awards, and is confident that its new range of pork, apple and scrumpy, pork and chorizo and its breakfast version will prove equally popular with the public.
