To the Haters! (specifically the guy at GNC!)

So here is going to be a quick blog about one of my biggest pet peeves. Rude people or as I like to call them douche bags.

At work today I planned to finally have some of the protein powder that was sitting in my cabinet for what seemed like months, I mixed it with the proper amount of water, took a big chug…It was horrible. The smell alone almost made me gag, flipping over the container I found that it had expired in April of 2014. Yeah so apparently months are years for me. I googled the closest GNC to my work and saw it was only 1.4 miles away.

Figuring that I could just walk there to get in my steps for the day I grabbed my purse (forgetting my headphones which sucked but gave me ample time to call my dad and some others that I really needed to talk to, almost a win-win) I was on my way. 1.4 miles on a treadmill is almost nothing for me but put me out in the middle of California heat, midday in a sweater and I am in hell. Passing girls running and guys bicycling I figured that we are all on the same course and had a rather poetic moment as I was thinking about how I would blog on that we all are connected by a single goal.

And then it happened, I met the biggest jerk in history. I walked into GNC and thought I knew exactly where I was going. Navigating isle after isle I was looking for Syntha-6, its what I used on deployment back in the day and I liked the taste so I figured I’d stick with what works. I finally found what I was looking for like Indiana Jones discovering the resting place of the grail. I pick it up and made my way to the guy behind the counter asking if they had any other flavor beside Vanilla. I have never been fond of Vanilla (somehow they ruined my favorite flavor of ice cream by making it with what I am assuming is grass) and I remember having a cappuccino flavor back in the day that was amazing.

As I asked this question I hear from behind me “hey, Girl”. Now if you’ve never met me you may not know my strong almost bitchy/sarcastic personality. I do not handle rude people well and instantly give them a taste of their own medicine. Now keep this in mind as you continue reading. “Yes Guy?” I answered.

“You do know that Syntha-6 received an F rating on the protein scale right Girl?”
“I cant say that I have, Bro…” I answered in the most sarcastic way possible hoping he would realize that you don’t talk that way to a stranger. He, as I would expect from any moron, did not.
“Yeah girl,” shaking his shaker cup stepping into view in wearing what had to possibly be the smallest size of black cycle shorts he could find. I swear I was afraid to look down because I would have invaded his privacy. ”Do you even know what you’re looking for?” he asked once more.

Now THIS, THIS is what upsets me. Working out, choosing to get healthy, eating right, all of these things are very hard and a huge life-style change. It’s very intimidating to walk into a gym alone for the first time to sign up. It is an emotional journey when you go to the grocery store for the first time trying to only buy healthy items for the next few weeks. So why, why does this person feel its his life goal to try to intimidate me into leaving? Does it make him feel better that he is more “fit” than me? He is apart of the problem. He is the reason why we are nervous to hit the gym, why we are scared to ask for help. Ugh. I was so angry.

To continue with this lovely story because it gets SOO Much better! He shook that damn cup in my face, I felt like if he stopped his body would just reject the bottle and it would shoot out of his hand exploding into a mass of destruction. I finally decided to take a step back and “check out the competition”. This was amazing. Not only were his shorts as short as they could possibly be and still get away without being arrested for public nudity but his “SWAG” cut up muscle-t really gave me a feeling that I was speaking to someone with a higher education. His hockey helmet haircut really brought out the inbreeding in his eyes. “Well Brotato chip I cant say that I do know what I’m looking for, are you here to help?”

This did not go over well, he started to realize what he was up against. “So Brofessor? Are you going to give me a recommendation or should I go ask Teddy Brosavelt over there?”
No joke he decided to take me to the biggest protein container that should have been labeled Mega Epic Extreme Protein 3000 or something like that it was 179 dollars and said MEN all over it. “I see this is only for Brobots, do you have anything for women?”

“GIRL, I have to go do shoulders (as if he didn’t do his shoulder routine right this second it would kill him) if you’re still here in 45 MINUTES I’ll help you then”. Leaving in a rage of hormones I decided to crack out my phone and do a little google research. (I seriously feel bad for any person who ever had to ask this human if you can even call him that for help. He was so rude and intimidating that a normal person would have walked away and probably taken fitness on another day). Google pointed me to a new Whey protein made by women for women. Thought I’d give it a try, it had enough Iron, no sugar and what seemed to be the right amount of protein in one serving to keep me from chowing down on some chocolate.

Approaching the cashier one more time I asked if he knew that his co-work, boss or whatever he was had the personality of a wet blanket and really shouldn’t help anyone in the future because he was an (mind my French) asshole.

I left with my bag of goodies and I was and still am bothered by this. I am going to have to go back there tomorrow and give him a good piece of my mind. He works in a place that should be a safe haven for those who are looking for fitness advice and supplements to keep them going. When you walk into any store or shop that sells things for a healthy life style you shouldn’t feel judged or dismissed. I hope no one reading this will ever have to feel that way, and if you ever do let me know! I will be there as soon as I can to give them a piece of my mind!!

Have a wonderful workout! I believe in every single one of you and what you’re doing is the best choice you’ve made (probably not the single best choice since I know there are a lot of things in this life that ask for your immediate attention) but if you’re trying to become healthier, whether it be for yourself, your children, a loved one or an event that’s FUCKING AWESOME! Stick with you, YOU CAN DO IT!! No matter what the haters say. Let them drink their koolaid we all know where they end up!
