A wise man is the one who is strong enough to stand alone, smart enough to know when to ask for help and brave enough to know when to ask for it.

But the real strength of a leader lies in his resilience. It is a virtue that keeps great leaders standing even when chips are down. Take a look at all the names that have made it BIG in their respective fields. And, you will get to know that they all had their backs against the wall at some point or the other in their career.

However that did not deter them from bouncing back with an even stronger will and greater vigor to reach their target. One of the best examples of leaders, who has shown great resilience to failures, present in today’s time is that of Elon Musk. Not many people were in support of the brainiac who failed miserably during his early stint at SpaceX. And today the man is worth $12 billion.

All this because of one simple trait — Resilience!

Now the question that pops up here is — Is resilience something that comes naturally? Or can we inculcate in our life by practice? And the answer is a mixture of the two — up to a certain level we all have the power of resilience within, but with practice we can make it our biggest strength.

Here are some of the habits that can help you to inculcate resilience in your attitude -

Stop dwelling in the past

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned in life is to never let things of the past pull me back from a future that’s pulling me forward.

By living in the past you are hurting the chances of future growth. The decisions you took in the past were the best at that time, and according to that situation. It’s because of those decisions you are what you are, and that does not mean you have to keep pondering over them and waste the present time you have in hands.

The best way to come out of it — give yourself a break. Go for a holiday, make way for some positive thinking, or do something that can take your mind away from all this.

Let failures pause your journey, not end it

Failures are temporary. Don’t let them pause your journey. Think of failures as a way to improve. You never know which failure might prove to be a blessing in disguise. After all, nothing great was achieved in a single day.

If Edison has let failures pause his journey to discover the light bulb would have never been complete. Like the great American inventor used to say , “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”

By looking positively at something that did not work, you are actually giving yourself an opportunity to improve. Turn your failures into success stories by learning from them. And, that’s how great results are achieved.

Value the time you have in hand

I once read this quote in a school building — time wasted regretting is more time wasted. This quote kind of had an instant impact on me. And, inculcating this habit has had a huge positive impact on my life.

The difference between a successful person and a not so successful one is that the latter values time. For instance, I’d like to share a secret time management tip from Richard Branson,” One of my favorite tricks is to conduct most of my meetings standing up. I find it to be a much quicker way of getting down to business, making a decision, and sealing the deal. When given the opportunity, I often like to take things a step further — literally, with a walking meeting.”

Don’t waste time, make the most of it!

Take good care of yourself

A stressed mind is the biggest weakness of a leader. Stress cripples the mind of a person, leaving him in a state of vulnerability when it comes to decision making. And, trust me you would not want to be in that state of mind.

The same holds true with physical well being of a person. When you are not in good physical health you can never focus completely on your dreams. This is why taking good care of your health becomes the most important factor in becoming more resilient than you are right now.

Spare some time daily for physical activity — it could be anything — from a 30 min jog in the park to a vigorous yoga session. Eat healthy food — feed your body what it needs the most.

What are your thoughts on the list? Have some more tips which you think can be added here? Share them in the comments and I’d love to add them.
