What Do You Need to Start Working Out at Home?

Had a busy day yesterday, and today isn’t much lighter, so let’s get right to it: What do you need to start working out?

For starters, I do NOT recommend a gym membership. Over 80% of gym members don’t actually go to the gym more than a handful of times in a calendar year!

We can speculate as to why this is, but when you throw in an additional place to be 3–5 days per week doing something you don’t particularly enjoy, it can get real cumbersome real fast…

This is why I’m such a big believer in working out at home! In just 20 minutes, you can get a killer workout in that hits your whole body.

Over the course of a week, that’s spending a grand total of between 60–90 minutes on your physical fitness. That equates to about 1% week of your time each week.

If you say that you can’t allocate 1% of your time to exercise, then you’re just really bad at making excuses!

Below you’ll find a list of the Top 3 Things you’ll need to get your at-home fitness program started:

1. An Interval Timer App: This can easily be found in your phone’s app store. I recommend the one by DeltaWorks, which can be found on iTunes here, and Google Play here.

2. A Yoga Mat: This comes in handy if your available space to work out in is on a hardwood or tiled flooring.

It’ll save you from quite a bit of bruising, as well as putting undue pressure on your joints. Here’s a link to the one I use, which just so happens to show Han Solo being frozen in carbonite: https://onnit.sjv.io/c/438610/401366/5155

3. A Pair of Dumbbells: I’m going to give you a few options based on your current strength levels, how heavy (or not) you want to lift, and how much space you have to store these bad boys!

I personally use the Powerblocks below. Many of my clients have the Bowflex Adjustable Dumbbells at home, or the neoprene hand weights.

Obviously, you should have the right attire to work out in! That means a T-Shirt or tank top, sneakers, and either shorts, sweatpants, or spandex on your lower half. Email me if you want my recommendations for any of these pieces of apparel ;-)

Also, make sure you do a good warm up beforehand so that you don’t go into a workout cold. As I’m learning approaching my 30th birthday, the older you get, the more you need to warm up before physical activity.

Below you’ll find both my Total Body Foam Rolling Warmup, as well as my 3-Minute Dynamic Warmup that I do before every one of my workouts or softball games:

P.S. If you need a program to get you going, then you should check out my Fitness Test!

In just 7.5 minutes, you’ll be able to see where your fitness is good, and where it’s lacking…

Based upon the answer(s) to where it’s lacking, you can select one of my three 30 Day Online Fitness Programs through my app.

Each program comes with a calendar plan for 30 days, and video instruction by your’s truly ;-)

To take the Fitness Test, and to get things rolling, go to https://www.weightlossbypete.com/diyfitness. Take the Fitness Test, and select the button below the test that best describes your experience with it.

You’l then be redirected to purchase the program (each one is just $30!), and you’ll be off to the races!

That link again is https://www.weightlossbypete.com/diyfitness.
