What Does Meditation Have to Do with Weight Loss?

What if I told you that you could curb your cravings and maintain your motivation to stick with your weight loss goals through the act of… Meditating?

It worked for me, it’s worked for many of my clients, and it can work for you, too!

When we want to begin our weight loss journey, what are some of the common things that happen?

We join a gym.

We go on a diet.

If we have the means, we’ll hire a fit pro or a medical professional to see us through to our goals.

While these actions are all well and good, they’re missing a key component that so many neglect: What’s going on between the ears!

You see, you can keep all the physical ducks in a row for an extended period of time:

You can work out 5+ days per week.

You can stick to a diet 80+% of the time.

You can prioritize your sleep, and insure you’re well-rested more often than not.

You can do all that, but is that all you need to do to reach and then sustain your results over time?

Sadly, it is not!

We turn to comfort food(s) for just that: Comfort.

Between the dopamine rush we receive when biting into a sweet, or the temporary relief we get when we’re binge-watching our favorite show(s) on Netflix, we have a nasty habit of avoiding both our thoughts and our feelings.

Part of this is the instant gratification we receive in so many aspects of our society.

Another part is that we’re not taught (either in school or by our parents) how to handle working through the ‘stuff’ that gets to us on a daily basis.

Sometimes, this is because the very people we’d look towards to teach us don’t deal with their own personal crap!

In other cases, we’re given a trophy merely for participating, and not for actually winning or succeeding at something important.

The mounting debt? The rocky relationship? The addiction(s)? Yeah, those things can wait until tomorrow…

But tomorrow never comes! And until we learn how to deal with turmoil and come out the other side, we’re never going to stay on the path to Permanent Weight Loss.

I started meditating about four years ago. I’ll be the first to admit: I was skeptical at first!

If you hadn’t picked up on it, I’m not a beta male (no offense!). I opposed doing yoga for nearly a decade until I was literally in so much pain that I was willing to do anything to get some relief.

Why?

Because I thought it was for wusses! I thought that the only way to work out was through bodybuilding-style workouts, and that if I wasn’t lifting heavy weight, then I was just wasting my time.

Obviously, this couldn’t be further from the truth! The same is true of meditation.

Due to the plethora of apps and free resources out there, you can start meditating today by simply visiting your smartphone’s app store, and either downloading one of these apps for free, or paying a cheap annual fee.

I’ve personally used the Calm app for guided meditation. I’ve heard great things about HeadSpace, and now I’m a subscriber of Brain.fm.

All three of these apps offer guided meditations, and even have little programs that ease you into the act.

The narrator will tell you how to breathe, what to focus on, and how to get into ‘the zone.’ Early meditation sessions start at just five minutes, and can go up to an hour!

You’ll often have the ability (once you get the hang of it) to program how long you’d like to meditate for, which comes in handy when you’re short on time.

The point of meditation is to slow your mind, acknowledge your thoughts and your feelings, and let them go. It’s an activity that enables you to work things out in a quiet space, without the constant notifications and distractions popping up on your phone.

I recommend putting your phone on ‘Silent’ or ‘Do Not Disturb’ during meditation sessions. Like you should do when you work out, make that time your’s by eliminating all possible interruptions.

People often find that when they’re able to disconnect junk food and apathy from their problems, it’s a lot easier for them to stay focused on what matters most: Their health!
