Why I’m Glad It Took Me Six Years to Lose 100 Lbs!

If you had 100 lbs to lose, and I told you that I could guarantee that you’d reach your goal, would you be interested in taking me up on that?

‘Duh!,’ you’re probably thinking to yourself…

What if I told you that the one caveat is that it would take you six years to lose the 100 lbs? Is that still something you’d be interested in?

I’m willing to bet not!

One of the most common questions I get is how one can lose weight as quickly as possible. This question alone is why few industries make nearly as much as the supplement industry.

According to Business Insider, the supplement industry rakes in about $37 billion annually! And sadly, it’s entirely unregulated.

Don’t believe me? Check out the documentary Bigger, Stronger, Faster, where Chris Bell shows just how easy it is to create and market a bogus supplement in today’s world.

It’s disturbing, but is sadly reality!

Skimming through my Facebook News Feed, it saddens me to see folks just starting their weight loss journeys, asking about the best diet or pill to help them lose as much weight as possible as quickly as possible…

What’s worse are the responses! Recommendations for BS fat-burners, garcinia gambogia — The list goes on and on!!

While my six year weight loss journey certainly had its ups-and-downs, it taught me one important thing: How to lose weight and keep it off — FOR GOOD!

I wouldn’t trade those six years for anything. Despite an average weight loss of about 17 lbs, you have to remember that I plateaued for close to half that time — And it wasn’t for lack of trying!

I tried calorie counting, portion control, the South Beach and Mediterranean Diets. You name it, and there’s a good chance I gave it a whirl for at least a month during that period!

While I saw mixed results on these diets, none of them kept the weight off long-term.

Why? Because they’re quick fixes!

I was once told by a weight loss ‘expert’ that calorie counting worked best, because if you’re stranded on a desert island, you’re most likely going to be deprived of food, and thus calories. There’s no way that you don’t lose weight in that scenario.

In this context, he was absolutely right! But is self-imposed malnourishment the healthiest way to go about things?

I don’t think so! I hope you don’t, either…

Some people just don’t care. Their vanity is their prime motivator, and that event or season coming up is all that’s on their mind. They’ll do whatever it takes to fit into that dress, or to look good in that swimsuit.

Perhaps they’ll even succeed!

What happens to those people when that occasion or that time of year comes and goes? They revert right back to the bad habits that led them to being both overweight and unhealthy in the first place!

Is the duration for my 100 lb weight loss impressive? Absolutely not! That doesn’t mean that if I had to go back in time and do it all over again, that I’d do it any other way!!

I learned a lot about myself during my three year plateau. I struggled. I dealt with disappointment regularly. But I never gave up!

When one fad diet didn’t work, I tried another. And another. And just when things really started looking bleak, I found out about the Paleo Diet, which changed my thinking on the topic of nutrition forever!

Instead of worrying so much about how much I was eating, I began to focus on what I was putting into my body. I cut back considerably on the junk, and started fueling my body with real, whole foods, instead.

This nutritional philosophy helped me shed the 70 lbs I gained in college, and turned me on to the possibility that I had a food allergy. Once I realized what that was (dairy), I cut back on that considerably, and wa-la: 100 lbs down!

Along the way, I had to learn healthy recipes and healthy substitutes for different foods that I was used to ingesting regularly. Some were good, some were bad.

The point is that the learning process that I went through during this time is something that I will never forget!

If you want to make a healthy, sustainable, and permanent change, then you need to take the time to do things right.

Following the Permanent Weight Loss Pyramid is just half the battle! It’s making the four tenets a habit, and never doing away with them.

A crash diet is just that — A diet that will cause you to crash and burn in the long run!

Take it from somebody who’s been there and done that: Lose weight the right way. Take the time to learn more about your body, and learn more about how you can make healthy eating, quality sleep, and regular exercise work for you.

Talk tomorrow!
