Hulu’s Newest Redesign might want to look as far back as 2017

Business Insider named Hulu the second best streaming platform of 2021, after Netflix. The magazine accredited this honor to Hulu’s wide range of shows, including successful originals, and the platforms affordable prices. Hulu has come a long way since its first redesign in 2017 and the platform will be releasing its newest redesign this year.

Hulu’s upcoming redesign can take some examples from its successful previous. This 2017 raw Hulu data allows you to see which tv shows were more successful than others and why. The data analyzes Hulu’s top 1,000 most popular shows of all time.

The data shows Hulu’s range of tv shows and their 5-star ratings from 2017. The streaming platform has a wide range of genres, but the top-rated genres of were Drama and Comedy. The data below helps compare these two genres.

After viewing the top 25 comedies and top 25 dramas on Hulu, they were then compared to see which genre had higher ratings. For Drama, 16 tv shows received a rating greater than 4.5 stars. For Comedy, 10 tv shows received a rating greater than 4.5 stars. The highest rating received was from a drama tv show, “This Is Us,” with 4.79 stars.

Dramas had 6 more tv shows that received a rating greater than 4.5 stars. Dramas were the highest rated tv shows in comparison to comedies on Hulu in 2017 and had significantly higher ratings than any other genre.

Higher ratings are usually in direct relationship with popularity among streamers. Ratings are based on the quality of a show, and the better quality, the more likely for it to have viewers.

Another way seeing a tv show’s popularity is by their season count. Tv shows with more seasons likely have more fans and more people interested in watching them, which is why they’re constantly getting new seasons. If viewers are interested, then tv shows are likely to continue.

The visualization above allows us to see which tv ratings had more seasons on Hulu. Hulu had a total of six tv ratings, with TV-14, TV-MA, and TV-PG having the most total season counts on Hulu. These three tv ratings are also the highest in terms of maturity. TV-G, TV-Y7 AND TV-Y are child-friendly shows. The higher the tv ratings, the more likely for it to have more seasons.

Among all, TV-14 had a significantly larger total season count with 382 seasons. That’s 299 more seasons than the next leading tv rating. TV-14 also accounted for 65% of all of Hulu’s seasons in 2017.

On the other hand, the lowest tv ratings had significantly smaller seasons counts. Together, the three lowest ratings accounted for less than 10% of tv seasons on Hulu. The lower the tv rating, the less likely for the tv show to have many seasons. This is an indication that children tv shows aren’t very popular among Hulu’s subscribers. It can also be an indication that Hulu’s greater audience are adults.

Lastly, I took a look at which networks had the highest number tv shows in Hulu’s 2017 redesign.

The chart above organizes the top 5 networks on Hulu based on the amounts of shows they had streaming on Hulu.

ABC, FOX and NBC were the top 3 networks with shows on Hulu in 2017. ABC led the networks, with 18 shows, while FOX and NBC were close seconds with 16 and 12 tv shows streaming.

The lowest of the top 5 was Nickelodeon, which is another indication that children tv shows aren’t the most popular among Hulu’s viewers and the reason could be the number of adults that use Hulu over children.

These networks clearly have popular shows. Having tv shows from these networks is likely to bring fans to Hulu’s platform to view them.

This Hulu data from 2017 can help Hulu’s new redesign when picking what content should be on the platform. Tv shows have grown in popularity and having the content most people want to see can increase subscription numbers for Hulu. It can also give an idea of which tv shows should be added to Hulu in 2021, based on tv ratings, genres, genres, season count and star rating.
