OnlyFans grew remarkably during the pandemic

OnlyFans, a social media platform that allows people to sell explicit photos of themselves, has boomed during the pandemic. Since the global COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020, searches for “OnlyFans” on Google have increased tremendously.

Fenix International is the parent company of crowdfunding platform OnlyFans, the site best known for charging fees for nude content, which has been trying to expand beyond its core community to influencers, actors, musicians, singers, models, etc. It is fact that the Covid-19 pandemic sparked a surge of creators and fans of the service.

OnlyFans reports that between March and April, the site saw approximately 200,000 new people signing up to the site each day. According to Earth Web, today, there are more than 170 million registered subscribers and more than 1.5 million content creators worldwide.

As we can see in the google trend visualization, the numbers of searches started growing on March 2020. It increased from 2% to 17% when the pandemic started back on March 15, 2020. It also shows us that in August 2020, the interest of the site tripled to 58%, and its peak season was recorded in late August 2021 at 100%. However, it decreased in September 2021 to 66%, and since then, it has not risen again.

People turned to OnlyFans to earn money after losing their jobs during the pandemic, but it looks like people stopped searching for this site when the pandemic was over in many countries, and they were back to normal.

The pandemic helped and accelerated the trend.

If we talk about what region showed more interest in searching for this platform, we can say that Puerto Rico, specifically the city of Sabana Grande, was the region that showed the greatest interest. In the same way, the US is in the top 5 of the countries that had he most interest in OnlyFans with 90% of searches in the last five years. Costa Rica, Panama, and Ireland join the list respectively.

A surprising fact is that Japan is the country that has given less interest to the online subscription platform in the last five years. This might be because of the pornographic censorship they have.

According to the pornographic censorship in Japan, “a person who distributes, sells or publicly displays an obscene document, drawing or other objects shall be punished by imprisonment with hard labor for not more than 2 years, a fine of not more than 2,500,000 yen, which means almost 3 million dollars.” The same will apply to a person who owns the same for the purpose of selling it.

The porn industry has often been an early adopter of new entertainment platforms, like OnlyFans, and people realize that now more than ever.
