Anime and games have gotten more popular as a medium. The anime and gaming communities are passionate and dedicated, looking forward to anything new of their favorite titles. Companies that hold these titles have taken notice and have produced adaptations like blockbuster movies and binge-worthy series on streaming services like Netflix. These adaptations have captivated audiences’ attention in both good and bad ways. But what exactly makes them so popular to fans and wanting more, even if they aren’t particularly good or depict the original story correctly?

Mouse over the adaptations to see ratings.

The allure starts with the source material’s established canon.

The rich storytelling and characters’ compelling backstories are present in both anime and video games. Anime originals often start from their manga or light novels (the book version with hand drawn pieces). They explore complex themes, like existential crises and things that would affect the world. The combination of comedy and serious tone in anime resonates with viewers on a deeper level.

Similarly, video games offer immersive narratives where players become emotionally invested in the journey of the characters they control, which pushes the player into feeling conflicted or liberated when making choices. When these stories are interpreted into other forms of media, they bring along these captivating storylines, drawing in both existing fans and newcomers.

It doesn’t help either that the action set-pieces in the anime and games leave more to imagine when given a bigger budget and live-action scenes. It brings hype when it’s shown that the visual appeal of anime and video games can be elevated, they do often play a significant role in their popularity. Anime’s vibrant art styles, distinctive character designs, and fluid animation, when done correctly and transitions to the big screen can push the fandom to greater heights, getting new fans into the subject and give more to converse.

Video games on the other hand have cutting-edge graphics, stunning cinematic’s, and beautiful world-building, creating visually stunning experiences. Adapting into movies or shows, these visuals are often brought to life with cinematic flair such as the Halo tv series. Unfortunately, not all titles are given the same amount of respect they deserve.

There is often a big gap when it comes to the amount of iterations comparing anime and games, with games often having more interpretations.

More doesn’t necessarily mean better in these cases. Because every adaptation is often diverging from the source material in some manner, they can lose focus of what made the original so popular. Fans and critics alike happen to notice these changes. The hope is that from the feedback, that they would make the changes for the incoming sequels.

While positive feedback is good for these adaptations, the negative never really stops the production of future projects. The enduring popularity of anime and game adaptations can be put into a combination of factors, including the compelling storytelling, visual appeal, built-in fanbase, cross-promotion like having games be animes and vice versa.

Adaptations will continue with the popularity of the anime and games their following, while not always living up expectations, fans will find a way to enjoy it nonetheless. We can only expect to see more adaptations that give more respect to the rich and diverse worlds of anime and gaming.

But if you’re a fan of either, we put together a quiz for the fans.
