South Florida’s Voting Gap

Despite South Florida being Florida’s hotspot for votes, Miami-Dade, one of three counties that make up South Florida, has a voter registration rate of only 54%. Miami-Dade also has the highest population of all the counties in Florida. Voter registration in Miami-Dade faces multiple challenges. One key factor is the diverse demographic of the county, with a significant portion being immigrants, many of which struggle to understand the U.S. electoral system and also experience a language barrier. Additionally, Miami-Dade has a high percentage of seasonal residents which makes it challenging to maintain an accurate voter count. Some communities struggle with historical issues of mistrust with political processes, combined with concerns about privacy and immigration status, may scare off citizens from registering. Addressing these issues requires outreach and educational efforts to inform the citizens not only of their right to vote but also how to do it and what is needed. In order to achieve this, the city must be willing to make an effort to give their citizens a voice.
