At the halfway point of the NBA’s regular season, the league and fans recognize the league’s top players by voting them into the annual All-Star Game. This year it was held on February 20th in Cleveland, Ohio. Team LeBron defeated Team Durant 163–160 in the recently changed format that increased excitement for the fans. One player in particular stood out in the All-Star game. Stephen Curry scored 50 points and made 16 3-pointers for Team LeBron, earning him the game’s Most Valuable Player award.

After doing some research on Google Trends the number of searches for “Stephen Curry” seems to spike enormously the day of the game, increasing from a 28% search interest at 9 p.m. to a 100% search interest at 11 p.m., which is a 72% point difference in just two hours.

People found an interest in Curry after seeing him perform so well during the game that they took to Google to learn a bit more about him.

Although basketball is a sport that is played all around the world, it is well known that the NBA is the most competitive and renowned league in the sport. Any young athlete that aspires to play professional basketball dreams about playing in the NBA. Leagues in other countries are not at the level that the NBA is so naturally the majority of the NBA’s fans are going to be from the U.S.

To no one’s surprise, there was a 100% search interest in the U.S. during the All-Star game, but what is interesting is the search interest in other countries. There was a 74% search interest in Canada, and surprisingly a 42% search interest in Australia. Maybe it had something to do with the young rising stars Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels, both Australian natives, playing in the Clorox Rising Stars game.

For now, both trends may remain with low search interest, but come the NBA playoffs, searches for Stephen Curry’s name may spike again. History tells us how well he performs in the playoffs. He is one of the greatest point guards and shooters the game of basketball has ever seen. He is a 3x NBA Champion, 2x NBA MVP, and 8x NBA All-Star, so it would just take one big game for his name to spike up on the charts.
