Techs and Teens: The Effects of Social Media on Teenagers

Every generation is characterized by something iconic, whether it be the music of the time, a social movement, or some significant economic event. The generation belonging to the 21st century is characterized by something never seen before: the internet and social media.

Social media has revolutionized the way society communicates and has a number of notable advantages. By using social media, people can connect almost instantly with someone over long distances. It also allows people to stay up to date with current events and follow celebrities, political figures, and

Though social media has given great advantages for communication and information sharing, children that have grown up using social media can be observed to go through some serious repercussions in their development.

Most teens use social for at least nine hours a day, scrolling through pictures, posting videos, and personalizing their content. Sometimes they become dependent on getting their followers approval, so they become vulnerable to harsh comments and bullying. Teenagers susceptible to this can develop mental health issues like social anxiety and depression.

Because interactions on social media are all virtual, teenagers are spending less and less time being with their friends in person. These interactions are, therefore, less meaningful and can lead to a feeling of isolation.

Social media has helped us advance as a society that communicates more efficiently, but the dangers it presents to the upcoming generations should be monitored.
