A Sandwich Lesson

The sandwich as we currently know it is named after John Montagu, the Earl of Sandwich. It is rumored to have been invented by him as he was so into gambling that he would stay at the table for hours and forget to eat, sleep, use the restroom, anything (a la Adil). One day, realizing he didn’t want to break from his poker to eat, he asked his servants to bring him salted beef and toasted bread, and he fashioned a sandwich from the ingredients so that he could eat the meat without sullying his hands as he played. His gambling friends began to pick up on this, and would order “the same as the Earl of Sandwich” which eventually shortened to just “sandwich.” So we have gambling to thank for this heavenly food item.
