Fivetran announces 5-minute syncing

Caution: Near real-time syncing to a data warehouse comes with costs.

Fivetran customers asked for near real-time data syncing, and we’ve responded. We now support 5-minute syncing for all of our data connectors — from databases to business applications to file storage. Fivetran offers a pipeline to centralize your data into a data warehouse. Our connectors range from Asana to Zendesk, and everything in between and more. At the end of the pipeline is where companies perform advanced analytics with their business intelligence tool of choice.

To enable this new syncing feature, Fivetran customers must go to their Fivetran dashboard and navigate to a connector they want to sync more frequently. From the drop-down menu, choose the 5-minute sync. That’s all that’s required of our customers.

Choose sync time from the drop-down menu.

Once the 5-minute sync is chosen, Fivetran will attempt to sync that connector as fast as every 5 minutes. We can’t guarantee it will sync that quickly because it also depends on the data source and the destination warehouse. For example, a database containing thousands of tables might take longer than 5 minutes to sync incrementally.

Note of caution

For most scenarios, you probably don’t need or want your applications to sync data every 5 minutes. Data warehouses were not designed to ingest tons of small updates. Instead, they were built to run fewer but larger updates. Deploy this new feature judiciously.

Increasing sync times won’t affect your Fivetran pricing. However, it might impact how much you pay for your data warehouse, and it might create unanticipated data bottlenecks at the warehouse.

Our most popular data warehouses are: Snowflake, Google BigQuery and Amazon Redshift. They are all Fivetran technology partners, too.

Here are some data warehouse issues that might occur when opting for the 5-minute sync:

For Snowflake, shorter sync times results in an increased amount of time that the ingestion warehouse is awake. This will increase your ingestion costs.

For Redshift, you will hit concurrent-transaction limitations much faster under a 5-minute sync. Concurrent-transaction bottlenecks result in all queries to the warehouse being delayed, thus degrading your cluster performance.

For BigQuery, table upserts are equivalent to processing the entire table, meaning ingestion costs will scale with the frequency of updates.

Honesty is the best policy

At Fivetran, one of our credos is to be honest and upfront with our customers about technology trade-offs. That’s why we told you of the warehousing pitfalls that may occur with a near real-time sync.

Still, we’re implementing this feature because our clients have requested it. And indeed, there are a myriad of use cases — warehousing issues aside — where you absolutely would want a 5-minute sync.

For example, you might use Fivetran’s data connector for Mixpanel to collect real-time, event-level data about your company’s website. If website traffic tapers off or increases dramatically, you will want to know this sooner, rather than later. Your website might be going down, or sales might be going through the roof.

We hope it’s the latter.
